FINDING YOUR PURPOSE
By Jeff Baldock
Hi, I am Jeff Baldock and welcome to Careersport’s Soaring to Success Program.
Today, I am going to be looking at an issue that is a concern for a lot of people. This issue is about helping people to understand their purpose and to help them get clear on where they are going in terms of their direction. Purpose may be one of those words that is often thrown around loosely by many people.
I want you to understand that without purpose, without really knowing what your key objective is and without an inspiring need for which you will apply your gifts and talents, there is really very little use in setting goals. Without purpose based goals, we are essentially taking shots at uninspiring targets. However, to get those goals, we should have a purpose and that is where everything starts.
Purpose really is about understanding a need, a need that exists out in the world, a need that exists out in business, or a need that exists in the community that you attracts you. It is one that will help you to get in touch with what really you are inspired to do to make a difference for others, and by having to look at yourself and by acknowledging where you have a particular passion to contribute to the needs of others, you will find that very purpose.
Every one of us has been designed or has been built in such a way that we have particular talents. There are areas where you will find that you are naturally motivated to contribute those talents or apply those talents to make a difference for others and help them to solve their problem. This really is the essence of purpose.
It is the need that exists that is compelling for you that you find yourself motivated to apply your talents, to give up your time, to give up your abilities, and to apply efforts to set plans and to take action to solve that problem. And that can sometimes take place at work or in school.
Take for example in the business world, their might be a compelling business problem, specifically, an information system problem that you want to take the time to uncover what it is that your gifts and talents can be applied for to help resolve the problem. At that point, you will then look up what that vision is, or in other words, with that solution in mind, it is to meet that need or that purpose and set goals and plans that will actually work on the execution and deliver on something that will ultimately solve the need, and hence, fulfill the purpose.
In school, on the other hand, we find that students typically have an area of study for which they are naturally drawn and motivated to study. This area causes them to focus on a topic rather than the generalities. There will academic subjects require of a students that can be motivating only because the student connects the need for this information to their purpose. Hence topics or courses that might otherwise be considered dull will be held as interesting because they can see how learning that information will help them to fulfill their purpose and dream. There will be project topics or thesis topics that will naturally draw these students to them because they are captivating. There is something about these topics that compels them. A topic such as “Save the Dolphins,” for example, for some and for somebody who has got some biology projects, they will prove that because that is what they really are motivated to do, to study and research.
I am going to encourage you now to take the time to really think about what it is that is challenging for you. These might be things in life that just bug you or you are concerned about. These might be areas for which you want to make a difference or that you want an impact on. When you have the time to consider and reflect what it is, then, you will consider that as your purpose. In other words, think about a key objective, something that you want to do to apply your talents for to make a difference for the lives and the needs of others. Again, I am encouraging you to take the time to do that. Consider some of the needs that are compelling to you, like needs of the world, needs in the business world, things that concern you, things that bug you or things that bother you that you feel somebody ought to do something about. And for some reason, it seems to be you that is motivated to do something about that.
So I will leave you with that for now.
Thank you for joining us today and I am looking forward to talking to you again soon.
All best as you soar to success!
